Location

The main gates of the Cambridge Botanic Gardens.

Its location on the corner of Long Road and Trumpington Road means that although Gilmerton Court is just a 10-minute cycle ride/30-minute walk from the bustle of the city centre, it also feels very close to open fields and countryside.  Cambridge’s main shopping streets, outdoor market, restaurants, museums and arts venues are all within easy reach, as is Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and also the railway station with excellent connections to London and beyond.  For those who like the outdoor life, the nearby country parks at Clay Farm, Trumpington Meadows and Wandlebury provide space for recreation, exercise and bird watching.  The Cambridge University Botanic Garden is just up the road and from opposite the Botanic Garden, the path along Vicar’s Brook leads to Sheep’s Green and the start of a popular walk across the fields and along the river to Grantchester village. Practically on the doorstep, are the Green Man Pub and Restaurant, the Sole and Duck Restaurant, and Hudson’s Ale House, while heading just a little further out of Cambridge, there are several pubs in the villages of Grantchester, Shelford and Stapleford (also home to Stapleford Granary Arts Centre).  5 minutes away, on Anstey Way, there is a fish and chip shop, as well as a dry cleaners, a florist, and a post office/convenience store.  A large Waitrose is within walking distance and there are also smaller supermarkets close by in Trumpington Meadows (Sainsbury’s Local) and Hobson Square (Nisa Food Store), where the local library and a pharmacy can also be found.  Shelford Deli is within cycling/walking distance, as are Balzano’s Delicatessen on Cherry Hinton Road and a variety of independent food shops on Mill Road.  There are cinemas close to hand in the city centre and at Cambridge Leisure Park.  Easily accessible venues for live performances include the Arts and ADC Theatres, Cambridge Corn Exchange, the Junction, West Road Concert Hall and Stapleford Granary Arts Centre.  And all of the above really is just the tip of the iceberg…
